Before the Mo(u)rning's story starts in the heart of the Long Island
punk scene. Three kids in Bayshore/Brentwood decided they wanted to make
music. Pam could sing, Mike had been learning guitar and Chris had been
learning Bass. Mike is a poet and was writing for years at this point.
Using his large collection of poems the three attempted to write songs
by putting the words to music. Unfortunately, this three piece effort
didn't get very far. The creative process seemed stalled. They attempted
to give it a kick start by taking some of the better arrangements and
playing with a drummer, Mark, who is Mike's roommate at the University
of Connecticut and had met Pam there the semester she attended UConn.
However, no matter what they tried they just couldn't get this band off
the ground. Mike had affectionately called that band "Some Assembly
Required" and the name was appropriate. Something was missing and the
creative process was in need of some assembly.
Pam had transferred back to the Island after a semester at UConn to
attend Hofstra Universiy and Mike still attends UConn with Mark. A year
or so after their first attempt Chris approached Mike about possibly
starting another band with his friend Henry who played guitar. Henry and
Chris had heard about a possible battle of the bands at their high
school and wanted to form a band of their own. They asked Mike to join
on guitar and Pam on vocals. The original lineup also included Winslow
on vocals, but he shortly thereafter parted ways with the band to pursue
other interests. Before the Mo(u)rning still thinks Winslow is
completely awesome. The last member of the band was Mark on drums.
The five piece outfit immediately clicked on a creative level and began
writing from scratch and demoing material to record an EP. This is where
the 5 people in two states part made things interesting. Mark and Mike
were in college in Connecticut, Pam was in college on Long Island, and
Chris and Henry were attending high school on Long Island. Mike still
lived on the Island so the band (minus a drummer) got together over
winter break and finished demoing 5 tracks to be recorded on their first
EP. Chris and Henry used their connections at WXBA 88.1FM (thank you Ms.
Ottone!) to get the band studio time to record Before the Mo(u)rning's
first album, the acoustic "Where's Our Drummer?" EP. This album was
available in limited numbers at no cost from the band members. You can
download the tracks online at the bands purevolume and myspace pages.
With this release Before the Mo(u)rning had officially achieved their
first goal: a recorded album.
In July of 2006 Mark also parted ways with the band, and Lindsay soon
after replaced him as the drummer.
Before the Mo(u)rning is currently writing and demoing more material for
their first full length album hopefully due out in Summer 2007. Long
Island rock is alive and kicking and Before the Mo(u)rning is proof of
it so look forward to a full-length electric album (with our drummer!).
